Career's Office — July 2, 2024
The Careers Department has had a productive term, with numerous events and activities, and much more is planned for the upcoming term.
We have hosted visits from Future Students Advisors from various universities. Students in Years 12 and 13 had the opportunity to attend these presentations detailing the offerings and opportunities at these institutions.
In Term One, all Year 12 students participated in career education classes that explored various career pathways and tertiary study options. These classes aim to help students identify potential fields of interest for their future endeavours. Additionally, Year 12 students attended a presentation by the Young Workers Resource Centre, which provided essential information about their rights as young workers. This was particularly beneficial as many Year 12 students are already employed part-time.
Term Two saw the commencement of career education classes for Year 13 students, emphasising the importance of planning their next steps and preparing for life beyond Dio. The Year 13 cohort also attended a presentation by the Young Workers Resource Centre, which this time focused on recognising incorrect employment practices and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves in the workplace.
A highlight of the term was a Q&A session, where Year 13 students engaged with three current University of Waikato students. Kimberley Blow and Emma Walters-Freke, from the Dio Class of 2022, are in their final year of studying for a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary). Maddy Karauna, although not an alumna of Dio, is in her third year of a Bachelor of Laws with a minor in Māori and Indigenous Studies. These students shared their university experiences, including transitioning from school to university-level study, living away from home, managing study expectations, and balancing academic responsibilities with a social life.
Years 12 and 13 have had the chance to attend the following presentations during term two.
Women in Engineering Sessions
The University of Waikato and the University of Auckland conducted sessions on Women in Engineering and the career opportunities available from gaining a Bachelor of Engineering. These highly informative sessions showcased the extensive support and encouragement available for women pursuing careers in engineering.
Queenstown Resort College
Queenstown Resort College is New Zealand’s premier tertiary training institution for Hotel Management, Adventure Tourism, and Hotel Business. Studying at this tertiary institution has been a pathway for Dio students into this industry. The COVID-19 pandemic substantially impacted the hospitality and tourism sectors, resulting in a decline in students choosing this career path. However, as tourism rebounds to near pre-pandemic levels, there are now numerous career opportunities for qualified and enthusiastic individuals in this industry.
University of Canterbury Scholarship and Accommodation Information Session
Our Future Students Advisor for the University of Canterbury conducted an insightful session on accommodation and scholarships. Liesl provided valuable advice on writing scholarship applications and detailed information on the accommodation options available.
University Course Planning Sessions
During Term Three, university course planners will visit Dio to assist Year 13 students who are preparing for their first year of university. These planners are an invaluable resource, providing detailed knowledge of their respective universities and offering guidance on selecting the most suitable courses for various majors across different degree programs.
