Waikato Diocesan School Year 13 Geography field trip - Rotorua 16 August 2024

A few weeks ago the Level 3 Geography students descended on an expedition to Aotearoa’s tourism capital Rotorua. The day started off with a look at one of New Zealand’s biggest claims to fame: sheep shearing. The Sheep Show at the Agrodome in Rotorua was one of our favourite parts of the day, where we were able to learn about all different breeds of sheep and even watched one get sheared.

After we had finished adoring the cutest little lambs we chose a high speed thrill, which was jet boating across Lake Rotorua. We geared up in life jackets and raincoats, ready to brave the splashes that were to come. To warm up again, we visited Manupirua Springs Hot Pools.

Our day ended with an insightful talk by a staff member of the Rotorua Museum.

This was a fantastic opportunity for us to explore the tourism scene in Rotorua for our external assessment, where we have to write an analysis on the spatial or temporal patterns of attractions and infrastructure in the city.

Health Curriculum

The Year 13 pastoral Health classes took part in a basic car maintenance class this week, thanks to John and Seth from Fairview Motors. The students learned about checking oil, coolant and brake fluid levels, how to jump start a car and how to change a tyre. It was great to see our students getting hands on and giving things a go. A big thanks to the team at Fairview Motors for making this possible for us each year.

We've also been fortunate to work with Sarah from Mindset Self-Defence in our senior pastoral Health classes, teaching our students valuable self-defence skills. Some of the skills covered included one-and two-handed shirt grabs as well as one-and two-handed choke scenarios, both on the feet or on the ground.

Our students have been great participants, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence develop over the sessions. Thank you, Mindset Self-Defence.
