Standing up for what you believe in

Reverend Stephen BlackAugust 29, 2024

"Special character" is a phrase that can be bounced off several meanings to suit a range of situations. Over the last seven days however, it has taken on a few significant dimensions, and I would like to honour those who have helped define them.

On Sunday night, three of our students stood up in front of their peers - and the wider Dio community - to commit their lives to following the Way of Jesus Christ.  They promised to forgive as they are forgiven; to love their neighbour as themselves; and to strive for peace and justice. As their first act after confirmation they washed the feet of people who are significant in their lives.

All of this was an act of courage and Gospel proclamation that defines special character. As a result they each received the first of the new "Marks of Mission" badge. The first mark is called "Korerotia - Tell." It recognises an exemplary commitment to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. The very next day one of our Year 12 students stood up to share her experience of being selected for, fundraising, and attending an overseas mission trip. She spent three weeks in Fiji learning, serving and being transformed by God for God's good purposes. Then she stood in front of the whole school and shared both her experience of mission and the Gospel message. It was eloquent, articulate and communicated her deeply held convictions. She likewise received the "Korerotia - Tell" badge.

Lily, Olivia, Brooke, and Maria, we are very proud of you. You have shown us all what special character means. May the Spirit of God bless and encourage you in your faith as you have inspired us in ours.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. (Isaiah 43.2)
