Extra-Curricular Sports Office — May 8, 2023
Senior A Futsal team competed in Wellington in the NZSS Futsal Championship and placed 8th overall. This team then won the Senior High School Premier League girl's final. The team was also awarded our “follow through”, aka Diligence award, for their excellent sportsmanship giving their best on and off the court - keeping the Dio name high.
Three of our students competed in the Lugtons Tennis Cup in Hamilton and placed 9th overall. A great experience all around.
1st XI (13 students) participated in the Gillette Venus Cup and won 2 of their 5 games. Excellent overall performance and standouts include:
Grace Buckleys 42/57 vs Gisborne
Gemma Spice took 8 wickets; her best figures were 4 wickets and 10 runs off 4 overs.
Catherin Hardie scored a total of 225 runs over the tournament period.
Rebecca Lamb took 8 wickets overall, and her best figures was 4 wickets over 7 runs.
We had 43 students compete in the Aon Maadi Cup, with 9 crews making an A final.
Dio finished the regatta 3rd Top Girls' School in New Zealand, 1st North Island Girls' School and 3rd overall North Island School behind HBHS and St Paul's Collegiate. Excellent performance.
Our “follow through” award went to the U17/U18 four: Alex Peoples, Te Aumihi Haggie, Isabelle Melville and Xanthe Lovegrove- Edlington.
Ten of our Senior A Volleyball team students competed in the Volleyball New Zealand Secondary Schools Nationals in Palmerston North.
Results
Our team placed 2nd in division five.
Petra Pratt-Rink was awarded the “follow through” award for showing a great work ethic throughout the season and her commitment to growing the sport overall.
Our Senior A water polo team competed in NZ Girls’ Div 2 Secondary Schools Nationals Water Polo tournament over the first week of the holidays. They played 6 games and finished 12th out of 16 teams. They learnt a lot from the experienced Auckland Water Polo teams, which they are bringing back into the Waikato Competition.
Over the holidays, our Dio girls competed in the 2023 NZ & Makos Zone SS Open Water Swimming Champs in Rotorua.
Results
1st Mt Maunganui College (253 points)
2nd Dio (116 points)
3rd position Awatapu College (87 points).
Dio took the podium with fantastic individual results
12-13 years - 1st place Tessa Scott 500m & 3.5km swim
14-15 Years - 2nd place Hayley McIntyre 500m, 3rd place Hayley McIntyre 3.6km swim
16-19 Years - 1st place Sophie Hay 3.5km
Impressively Sophie was the first overall female AND 4th swimmer to finish too!
Sophie Hay was the first female overall in the Bean Rock 3.2km Swim held over the weekend, completing it in just over 48 minutes.
Hayley McIntyre also got a podium in her age group, placing second in 55:44.
Immediately after the swim, Hayley got re-fuelled and completed the Amphibian race, consisting of a 500m swim, 3km run and another 3.5km swim. She was the first female in!
Our Dio Vixens competed in the Hamilton SS Term 1 Final at the Devils Inline Hockey Rink.
Playing with only three players, we ended the first half 1-0. The game ended with Liv Davys scoring with 0.2 seconds remaining, and the final score 3 -2. Our team placed 5th overall
A team of 4 riders - Libby Street, Fleur Street, Madison Tierney and Zara Cowen competed at a world-class equestrian facility - Takapoto Estate, against 45 secondary school teams and 180 riders. The team came home with 6th place, and our riders had individual wins and placings. Libby Street was 1st in the 110cm Equitation and 3rd in the 105 Accumulator.
Fleur Street was 1st in the 90cm 2 phase and 10th in the Equitation.
Zara Cowen was 9th in the 110cm Accumulator and 11th in the 105cm Equitation.
Madison Tierney was 1st in the 105cm Equitation and 8th in the 105cm Accumulator.
The Dio Climbing Team competed at the Waikato Regions Climbing competition.
Results
Sophie Carmichael placed 3rd in the under 16 topropes and 4th in the under 18 lead.
Renna Park placed first in the under-18 toprope and second in the female open lead; congratulations on your excellent results, girls.
In the first week of the school holidays, the following Dio Students competed at the Swimming New Zealand National Age Group Championships held from the 12th-16th of April at the new Hawkes Bay Regional Aquatic Centre in Hastings.
