Career's Corner

Sue WylieMarch 29, 2023

During this term, all Year 12 students have had career education classes as part of their pastoral line. The focus has been on exploring the options available once they leave Dio.

This could be to go on to tertiary study at university, a polytechnic or a Private Training Establishment, take a Gap year travelling overseas or working, start an apprenticeship or think about a career in the Defence Force or with the Police. It is essential to know the options available and what would be the best fit for them.

The Year 12 students were fortunate to hear from Dio Old Girl Emily Stevens (Class of 2017). Emily spoke to most classes about her career journey since leaving Dio. Her pathway wasn’t straightforward, and it took her a while to figure out what she wanted to do. Once she decided on Law, she hasn’t looked back and just started working with Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children.  It was good for the students to hear from someone who had been a Year 12 student at Dio and to hear her thoughts about what is important to think about now.

Future Student Advisors and Information Evenings

It has been a busy start to the year with several university Future Students Advisors visiting Dio during term one, including Auckland, Waikato, Canterbury, Massey and Lincoln Universities, and Wintec (Te Pūkenga). Otago, Victoria and AUT will be in school in Week 2 of Term Two. The advisors presented information about their university, including new degree information, level three subject requirements, available scholarships, and information on accommodation applications. They also answered any students' questions about specific degree courses they might be interested in. The sessions are open to all Years 12 and 13 students and have been well attended throughout the term. The advisors will be back in Term 3 to help our Year 13 students plan their degree courses, which will help them transition from Dio.

If your daughter misses the school presentation, there will be Information Evenings for friends and whaanau during Term 2. They are a good opportunity to learn more about what each university has to offer and often include the chance to speak with visiting academics in charge of some of the faculties at the university.

These are the confirmed Information Evening dates so far:

  • University of Canterbury - 16 May, FMG Stadium, 6:00 pm start
  • Victoria University of Wellington - 31 May, Claudelands Arena, 5:30-8:00 pm.
  • Lincoln University -  28 June (more details will be available soon)
  • Otago University -  24 July HBHS Hall 6.30 to 7.30 pm.
