Celebrating Sports@Dio
Below are some awesome sporting achievements from our athletes and teams from around our Kura. The school holidays also provided Dio girls the opportunity to compete in representative tournaments in their respective codes which we would like to celebrate with our wider Dio community. Read below to find out more.

Cycling

During the first weekend of the school holidays our cycling team competed in the North Island Championships held in Karapiro. Our cyclists gave it their all, showcasing their talent and determination. Elyse Barnett competed in the Criterium event for U16 Girls - B, she secured third place with a time of 15:02:73. It was a fantastic weekend for all competitors with a lot of space to grow for the many upcoming events for this team!

Futsal

Over the school holidays, junior students Mia Humphrey, Freya Douglas and Alexis McNae competed in the Buzz Electrics Youth Futsal Tournament in Hawkes Bay at the Napier Pettigrew Green Arena. Mia and Freya represented the Titan’s Futsal Club, while Alexis represented the 4-Zero Club by captaining the U14 girls team. Both teams competed in the U16 Girls Division with the Titan’s team coming away as the overall U16 Girls Division winners! Well done to Mia who also won the tournament MVP award for U16 Girls Division. Awesome stuff, ladies!

Hockey

During the first week of the holidays, Year 13 student Samantha Taylor and Old Girl Isobel McNally (Class of 2023), travelled down to Christchurch to compete in the 2024 Vantage National U18 Tournament, in the Waikato Wintec U18 Girls team. The team finished 14 overall out of 22 teams in the competition.

In the second week, on 15-18 July,  Waikato Hockey hosted the 2024 U16 Invitational Tournament, held at Gallagher Hockey Centre. The U16 Girls team included year 11 student Addison Carruthers and Old Girl Lucy Hadley. The team came out on top undefeated as overall winners of the tournament. Awesome playing and learning experience, nice work Addy!

Over the weekend, the 1st XI travelled to Whanganui to compete in the Central North Island Tournament hosted by Whanganui Collegiate. The girls came up against both Whanganui Collegiate Girls and New Plymouth Girls. The team came away with a great learning experience and the perfect opportunity to play some different schools they would not usually play and be able to bring out some new skills and team combinations in the build-up to Tournament Week.

Netball

Over the school holidays, we had multiple netball athletes competing in representative netball tournaments all over Aotearoa. Taranaki held the 2024 North Island Junior Netball Championships. The following students were competing and representing their respective centres: Cayla Buitendach; Olivia Wrathall; Indy Furniss; Ryan Woods; Sienna Mackintosh; Maclaine Stuart; Klaudia Horsfall; Amy Bryant.

Congratulations to Maclaine Stuart, Klaudia Horsfall and Amy Bryant who were part of the Hamilton City U16B team that took first place in the B grade.

Congratulations to Klaudia and Amy for being selected for the U16 B-C Grade Tournament Team.

Meanwhile our Seniors headed South to Netball New Zealand’s U18 Championships in Dunedin. Amy Thomas represented Hamilton City and Tia Lord represented Eastern Waikato. Both teams challenged and competed their way up the ladder making it to top 8, out of 38 regional teams. Hamilton City and Eastern Waikato ended up facing off in their final games for 7th and 8th place. It was a battle between both Waikato teams and Eastern Waikato ended up defeating Hamilton City by 32 points to 27.

Prior to the school holidays, our Premier Netball team held their annual quiz night to raise funds for their UNISS campaign held over winter tournament week. The night was a great success, with support received from parents and whanau, the netball and teaching community, and those that kindly donated wonderful prizes for our auction and raffles. The winners on the night were The Hat Tricks, a formidable team made up of our very own teachers. They were closely followed by Cheese and Crackers, who narrowly went down by 1 point.

Rugby

We are thrilled to support our students who play for other schools in rugby. In the last week of term 2, students Sophie Charteris, Kate Pridham, Sienna Meinung, Ruby Wilson, and Addison Carruthers played off against Cambridge High in the Waikato Secondary School Girls U17 (XV’s) Final. It was a riveting game and both sides were giving their all to claim the winning position. Unfortunately, Cambridge were able to come away with the win. A massive congratulations to these students and their teammates on a second place finish to the season.

Swimming

We sent a team of 8 swimmers to the NZSS Swimming Championships as held in Auckland at the Sir Owen G. Glenn National Aquatic Centre from July 25-28. The team produced some incredible results which saw our school place 4th Top Girls School in the Overall Relay points, 4th Top Girls School Overall and 9th Top School Overall (from 123 schools). The swimmers gave it everything they had, representing Dio with heart. Remarkable results for a small team. Very well done to all of the swimmers, you most certainly did yourselves and your school proud.
