HEALTH AND SAFETY IN BOARDING

Jacqueline SmithJanuary 30, 2025

We take our duty of care for our boarders seriously here at Dio.

We have at least two planned boarding lockdown, fire and earthquake drills. An essential part of ensuring our boarders safety is our security procedures, leave passes are submitted and approved in advance and signing in and signing out of boarding via Orah.

Over the holiday break an upgrade of the WDSG campus security system to the new multi-featured, fit-for-purpose Protege GX system has been started. This means that each main external door of our boarding houses now have keypad entry. More information will be shared when student electronic access processes, and boarding houses during after school hours has been confirmed.

Alarms in boarding

During term time two staff members are rostered on overnight alarm duty (10pm-7am) each night and will assist each other as necessary. The Director of Boarding is on call in an emergency. External alarms are set in Bishops Hall and Davis Houses at 8.30pm and Senior Boarding at 9pm. Internal alarms are set at 10pm.

Boarders are told that the only times they set off internal boarding house alarms is when they or a friend are sick, scared or in an emergency and they are to wait for duty staff (who makes their way to the student as soon as possible) in their designated boarding house common area. If internal boarding house alarms are set off and there is no boarder found waiting for duty staff or if it is revealed that a boarder/s sets off an internal alarm unnecessarily, relevant house parents follow up within their boarding houses and appropriate consequences are implemented. The wellbeing of all boarding staff and students is paramount.

Signing in and out Orah procedures in boarding:

Mornings before school

  • House parents on duty sign out boarders after checking all rooms are empty and boarders have left for school.

Afternoons after school, evenings including weekends

  • Boarders self sign in on Orah kiosks or NPC tags with their phones in their boarding houses.

  • Boarders submit passes for all off-site and on-site activities in advance and sign in out on approved passes and sign in to boarding.

We expect ALL our boarders to meet health and safety requirements by signing in and out on passes. Boarders not signing in or out of boarding, causes unnecessary stress on boarding staff having to follow up on their whereabouts when their time can be optimised in other ways such as planning and executing boarding activities with and for our boarders. The consequences for not signing in and/or out of boarding is that boarders will be immediately gated from sports/arts/personal leave (except medical/tutoring). This will be for one day and may be longer if there are further or frequent incidents.

Sports and arts staff have been notified and are always supportive of boarders learning more about responsibility and accountability.

Thank you very much in advance for your support in advance of our health and safety procedures and processes. It is appreciated.
