Wairakei School

Waimairi-iri CoL —

Wairakei School is a co-educational State U4 contributing primary school situated in the North-West of Christchurch. The school officially opened in 1950 and caters for children from Year 0 to Year 6.

Students are drawn mainly from the surrounding suburbs of Bryndwr, Burnside, Bishopdale and Papanui. The school has a roll of approximately 220 students.

Te taiao me nga rawa – Grounds, Facilities and Resources

Wairakei School is well resourced with attractive and extensive grounds. A wide variety of facilities and resources ensures that learning programmes are varied and engaging and school life is enjoyed by all students.

  • Four specifically designed adventure playgrounds.
  • An artificial cricket pitch.
  • All weather Netball and basketball courts.
  • Large 'Edible Garden'
  • Dedicated and passionate teaching staff
  • Generous IT resources provided include Interactive Whiteboards, Data Projectors, Chromebooks, i-Pads
  • 2017 - 2018 saw a major $2.1m refurbishment and upgrade of Otakaro and Wai-iti teaching spaces
  • New Learning environments for Wairere and a temporary home for Putahi (Allenvale satellite) completed in 2020
  • Stage 2 will begin in the first half of 2023 which will consist of:
  1. New admin area sited near middle carpark; refurbishment of Block 1 to incorporate admin and office spaces, medical room, community lounge, meeting spaces, library, staffroom and staff amenities, resource area, and staff workroom.
  2. The existing music room, and library will be demolished and new court area developed.
  3. The hall will also be given a refresh with new insulation, toilets, and new layout.

Hapori ako – Learning Communities

Students at Wairakei School are divided into three learning communities.

The Otakaro Learning Community caters for students learning in Years 0, 1&2 The Wai-iti Learning Community caters for students learning in Years 3 &4, and the Wairere Learning Community caters for students learning in Years 5&6.

New signage with our upgraded logo will be added to the buildings and site during the year once our cultural advisors have completed their audit.
