Across Kāhui Ako Literacy Leader
Kia ora, I am a Social Science Teacher at Burnside High School. I have been teaching for 10 years and have sought experience across a range of contexts including low-decile, special character schools in Canterbury, Grammar and Catholic schools in the United Kingdom as well as Libya. I have been exposed to a large range of pedagogy and assessment approaches. Given this experience I believe we are very fortunate to have self-governing schools and the flexibility of the New Zealand Curriculum allowing us to be responsive to the needs of our students. Communities of Learning bring new and exciting opportunities for localised innovation and collaboration across the duration of a learner’s journey through early childhood centres, primary and secondary education.
Being involved in education in 2017 is challenging and exciting. Our young people are stepping into rapidly changing environments and are presented with ‘wicked problems’ and it is my belief that us as educators to ensure they are ready with the skills and knowledge to succeed in solving these difficult complex problems. Being literate in a digital and quickly evolving world is difficult but I believe it is essential. By working together across multiple sectors we can form pathways and alignment so we can achieve the best outcomes for our ākonga.
