Mel Scarlett - Across Kāhui Ako Leader (AKAL)
Mel joined the AKAL team in 2021 and is based at Wairakei School.
I am now in my fourth term as an Across Kāhui Ako Lead. This is a diverse and rewarding role. I am currently teaching in Year 5 and 6 at Te Kura o Wairakei/Wairakei School.
I whakapapa to Kāi Tahu (Kāti Huirapa and Kāi Te Ruahikihiki), Te Ātiawa (Ngā Ruahine, Ngāti Haua, Ngāti Tu, Ngāitai Rakanui) and Tainui.
As an educator, I am passionate about Cultural Sustainability/Responsiveness, i te reo Māori, Quality Teaching and Learning, and inclusiveness for all ākonga/students. I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Te Reo Māori Bilingual and Immersion Teaching ‘Hoaka Pounamu’, a Bachelor of Education and Primary Teaching Diploma. I have completed Kā Poupou Reo o Tahu a course provided by Mātauraka Mahaanui. I have recently been a graduate of Te Ahu o Te Reo Level 5.
I enjoy working in a collaborative team environment and building positive relationships with tamariki, staff and whānau. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to work with kaiako, tumuaki, from other kura and developing strong connections to improve positive outcomes for ākonga within our Waimairi-iri Kāhui Ako.
This year Lisa Prince and I are working to together to support ECEs, Tuia Burnside Primary, Christ the King School, St Patrick’s School and Te Kura o Wairakei/Wairakei School. We also work collaboratively with our Kāhui Ako team and are happy to support across the Kāhui Ako.
