🏀BBNZ SOUTHERN CUP🏀
Tournament week Waimate High School had two basketball teams enter the Basketball New Zealand Southern Cup in Timaru.
Our very young girls team started off the tournament playing Burnside High School, after being down in the first quarter the girls came away with a win 58-51. Second game of the tournament was against Timaru Girls High School. This was really hard fought for the girls to come away with the win 52-50. On day two of the tournament the girls played Buller High School, the girls played extremely well coming away with the win 69-35. Then the girls came up against Trinity Catholic College, the girls were getting tired by then but didn't let it show coming away with the win 60-51.
The girls being undefeated and winning their pool meant that they were to play the final against a very polished Hagley College. They played extremely well and left everything they had on the court. Unfortunately going down but coming away with the silver medal. Congratulations girls. A massive thank you to Ruby Cochrane for coaching the girls and coming away with them for three days.
Our boys team started off the tournament playing against Christ College, this was a very tough game but the boys played extremely well. Losing 91-51. The second game of the tournament was against Rangiora High School, the boys played out of their skin coming away with the win 66-58. On the second day of the tournament the boys only game of the day was against Roncalli College, this was a very exciting game, boys going down 61-60. This meant that the boys ended up 2nd in their pool playing off for 5th-8th. The boys ended up 8th in the competition.
Congratulations boys. A massive thank you to Jason Sew Hoy for coaching the boys and coming away with them for three days.
On the last day of the tournament, Waimate High School provided an invitational team to play the team that placed 17th in the boys competition. This was a great opportunity for our boys. They played Geraldine B.
