First Foundation - Not Your Traditional Scholarship 🎓️

Cathy Shearer —

Strengthening the pathways, opportunities and choices that empower young people.

The First Foundation programme is much more than a scholarship. Not only will students get financial help, but they will also have a dedicated mentor who will be there for them along the way; so even if they’re the first in the family to go to university, they will have support from someone who’s been there before. Plus, they will get paid work experience to grow their skills, giving them access to the professional networks most people rely on for work opportunities.

2026 Application Dates
Stage 1 - Expression of Interest: 20th April- 6th May
Stage 2 - Additional Information & School Support: 15th - 25th June
Stage 3 - Scholar Matching & Interviews start: Early September
Scholarships Announced: 12th October, 11th November & 2nd December

Who Should Apply
Being successful in gaining a First Foundation scholarship does not mean rangatahi need to be top of their class, it means they're capable, motivated, and determined to succeed in degree-level study.

The First Foundation Scholarship Partners support a wide range of degrees, with most of the scholars studying Business/Commerce, STEM (particularly Science & Engineering), or Arts.

First Foundation state they always need applications for rangatahi interested in pathways into Economics, Finance, Computer Science/Technology, and Agriculture or Agribusiness, but encourage applications for all areas of study.
