"Not many people would want to go back to their school, but Nicole loves it and enjoys her job!"

What is “Humans of WHS”?

“Humans of WHS” is the opportunity to tell the tale of someone within our school community.

It is a research project that will enable Year 9 students to apply what they have learned about narrative texts to capture a meaningful story. It is based on the famous photography project “Humans of New York” , https://www.humansofnewyork.com/ . The Year 9s had an interview process and their goals were to tell a story, capturing as many details as possible, be respectful and demonstrate superb listening skills. I hope you enjoy this project that the Year 9 English classes have put together for you.

On Friday the 1st of November I had the pleasure to interview Nicole Cooney in her office at Waimate High School. Nicole lives in Waimate with her family and enjoys working here, at WHS. Nicole used to work at a bank, but it was closed because the bank moved to Timaru. So, on her journey, she decided to work at Waimate High School instead. Not many people would want to go back to their school, but Nicole loves it and enjoys her job. When Nicole Cooney returned to Waimate High School, she was not a stranger here because she went to WHS as a student and now her children go here as well. Nicole said she “loved her time as a student at Waimate High School and lots has changed since then”.

When I asked Nicole about her journey back to Waimate High School, she said she likes to deal with the finances, and she likes to help children with sports. She likes to see students achieve their goals but not only in sports but in everything. Some changes she said she would like to make are to get more students for the sports teams. She believes that this could be an opportunity for the students to be more successful. Her favourite part of her job is helping others, working with money. Nicole used to work at a busy bank and knows how to budget for things the school needs that are necessary.
