On Thursday, Ms Hunnikin spoke to the Year 7 students about nuclear energy. Alexis Murchie and Taylor Prue speak about what they learnt.

This term the Year 7 students have been learning about New Zealand's nuclear history, from supporting the British testing in the 1940s to becoming nuclear free in 1987.

Ms Hunnikin, who was an engineer before becoming a teacher, has an interest in nuclear energy.

She spoke to us about how nuclear energy is created, and taught us about protons and neutrons. She even got us to pretend we were protons and neutrons, and got us to explode!

Ms Hunnikin also spoke about how nuclear energy is used in both positive and negative ways. She spoke about nuclear bombs and weapons, and the destruction they have caused. We also learnt that nuclear energy can be used for good, like in medicine and for electricity.

We were fascinated to find out that nuclear energy can be found in bananas!

Thank you Ms Hunnikin for teaching us about nuclear energy!
