What is PB4L?

Paul Cartlidge —

PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning. PB4L aims to provide a positive school climate and to create a supportive environment for personal, social and academic growth for students and staff. PB4L-SW (school wide) takes schools through a three-tiered process. At each tier, schools use data to make meaningful and informed decisions and to put in place systems and practices that match the needs of their students. Currently Waimate Main School is working at Tier One and moving into Tier two.

At Main School our key values are Achieve, Care, Think (ACT). Everything we do revolves around our values.

When we notice that the children are using our values, we recognise this using our ACT bands.

When we notice that some children are not making good choices and are not following expectations we use the “Traffic Lights”.

At Main school we teach our values and expectations during class and at Whanau Group time. It is important that the children are taught about our values and how we ACT at the beginning of the year when we are setting up our classroom routines. We have a plan for what we need to teach at whanau group time. This plan is developed from the needs shown in our data as well as needs that teachers observe in the classroom or playground.

Playground behaviours of concern are recorded in the Duty Book which is in the white duty bum bag. That information is then passed on to the next duty teacher or recorded on a blue slip if needed. A relevant consequence is also given.

The blue slips are our way of recording Major and Minor behaviours. They are not a consequence for a behaviour. If a blue slip needs to be filled in to record a behaviour then there should ALSO be a consequence for that child.
