Gus Shirley —

One of our school values is Akoranga/Learning. This means we “Always strive to learn and grow”

We ask the students to do this by

- Being ready to Learn

- Having a positive attitude

- Displaying a growth mindset

In every assembly we try to have one of our students give a short presentation on one of our three school values, as a way of trying to make them more “real world” and relatable. As an example, two quotes from recent presentations about Akoranga (Learning), delivered by Y13 students James Strang and Sebastion Lams.

In order to learn we must try and fail, this is the easy part but also the part which most people will give up. Then and most crucially we must try again and again, changing the way we approach the problem, continuing this until we finally reach success.”

James Strang

“The key is to notice when learning opportunities come your way so that you can make the most of them, and when they do come your way to tackle them with a great mindset. Your mindset should be fearless, don’t be scared to fail, as you are not only learning from failure but is an opportunity for growth as a student, peer and person.”

Sebastion Lams
