Waimea College Winter Sports Exchange 2025 – A Proud Tradition Continues

Tara Hope —

This week, 49 students and 8 staff members from Waimea College travelled to Ōtautahi for our annual Winter Sports Exchange with Cashmere High School—a cherished tradition since 1959, shortly after both schools were established. This year marked the 42nd competition for the Winter Sports Tournament Challenge Shield.

Waimea entered the exchange as the 2024 Shield holders, leading the historical record with 21 wins to Cashmere’s 20. The 2025 fixture list included Netball, Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Hockey, and Boys’ Football.

The day kicked off with a closely contested Netball match. Our players kept pace with Cashmere through the first three quarters, but the home side pulled away in the final spell, securing a 36–19 victory.

In Boys’ Basketball, Waimea delivered a stunning performance. Despite a strong start, Cashmere pulled ahead for much of the game. Our team surged ahead in the final minute, only to be forced into overtime by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Cashmere. In the high-energy extra period, Cashmere clinched the game 92–82, but not without a fierce battle from our side.

The Girls’ Hockey team showed heart and determination but were outplayed by a strong Cashmere side, falling 10–0.

In Boys’ Football, despite some promising moments and flashes of skill, we went down 6–1 against a well-organized opponent.

Though we narrowly lost the Shield this year, our students displayed exceptional skill, commitment, and sportsmanship throughout. We are proud to announce our MVPs, as voted by Cashmere High School: Findlay Mold (Football), Courtney du Plessis (Hockey), Hannah Granger (Netball), and Micaiah Sampson (Basketball). Congratulations to these outstanding players for their impressive performances and leadership.

More than just competition, this exchange is about connection, tradition, and community. Our students built lasting friendships through the billeting program and represented Waimea College with pride.

We’re already looking forward to hosting Cashmere in Nelson next year and giving it our all to reclaim the Shield!
