Waimea College Piloting NCEA Changes

Yvonne Fenemor —

In 2022, Waimea College is supporting the Ministry of Education and NZQA to pilot new literacy and numeracy standards. These standards are being piloted with our Year 10 students.

The new literacy and numeracy standards will help ensure that students have the foundational skills to support them in further studies, work, and life. The standards will become a mandatory part of NCEA in 2023.

This pilot is part of changes that are happening to strengthen NCEA. Other changes include having more learning and fewer assessments, weaving mātauranga Māori through learning, and creating clearer pathways to education and employment.

The Literacy and Numeracy standards include:

  • A reading standard
  • A writing standard
  • A numeracy standard

What do you as whānau need to know about being a pilot school whānau?

  • Whānau are not expected to pay any extra costs.
  • The assessment will take place at the end of during Term 2 (June) and Term 3 (September).
  • The assessment will be a Common Assessment Activity. This is a test that students will sit in the classroom during the school day.
  • Credits achieved in the pilot will be counted towards your teen's NCEA results.
  • If your teen does not pass the standards during the pilot, they will still be able to meet NCEA literacy and numeracy requirements through the current list of standards. They will also have the opportunity to sit the assessment in 2023.
  • More information about NCEA can be found here.

Parents will be emailed the exact date of the assessments, and further information closer to the time.
