Performing Arts Department

Tracy Gibbs —

It's been a mammoth month for the Waimea College Performing Arts Department with students competing in Rockquest, Showquest and the NZ Chamber Music Competition!

2022 Smokefree Rockquest

Waimea College was well represented at this year’s Rockquest with 12 bands performing in the Regional Competition held on 10 June. Three of our bands were successful in getting through to the next round, so the next step is preparing and submitting a video submission of a new song – and they only have three weeks to do so!

The three bands were 'Screenshot' (Oscar Perrott, Nathan Downey, Bayley Holmes and Adam Teece), 'Smeez' Angels' (Emma Lynch, Baxter Richards, Isabelle Russell, Oliver Chandler and Giselle Chandler) and 'Sunray' (Tony Wonglangka, Indiana Daikee, Tyler Nichol, Sam Coleman and Michael Durbin).

Maddison Connor was part of a winning Solo-Duo performance, alongside Zac from Garin College, coming first in this category.

Congratulations to all of our successful students and our students that took part in this great event.

New Zealand Chamber Music Contest

A huge congratulations to our Percussion Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble for their respective performances in the recent Chamber Music Competition held at NCMA on 16 June.

Up against some extremely well-polished performers, they did themselves extremely proud and delivered an outstanding performance. Performing a piece written specifically for the group by Mr. Brett Smith, they won 'Best Performance of a New Zealand Work' and a 'Highly Commended'. The group have also been invited down to perform at the Regional Finals in Christchurch in two weeks. Well done Alex Bentley, Charlie McFarland, Pyper Smith and Adam Teece.

Our Percussion Ensemble, (Isabelle Russell, Jade Briggs, Riho Kawano and Sunny Neville), played a piece called 'Drumming Part 1' by Steve Reich on the bongos and were the Overall Winners. They are also now off to Christchurch to compete at the Regional Finals!

Showquest 2022

Waimea College had another fantastic year at the regional Showquest competition. Forty dancers took the stage at Nelson's Theatre Royal and put their best story telling skills to work. This year they told the tale of Juliane Koepcke, the sole survivor of a plane crash that landed her in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. This piece was choreographed by a creative group of dance leaders headed by Sophia Steer, Caitlin Anderson and Briea Anderson. The results come out later this week and the video will be available to watch on the Showquest website www.showquest.nz.
