Karla Thurlow —

The annual exchanges are always hard fought contests, with the travelling team alternating each year.

Marlborough Girls Exchange

This took place here at Waimea College on a stunning winter's day. We had a combined Waimea/Nayland 1st XI Football team, Senior A Netball, 1st XI Hockey and the Senior A Basketball team competing. With wins from the Football and Basketball team the trophy remains at Waimea College. This exchange has been operating since 2013 and Marlborough has won this twice!

Cashmere High School Exchange

With the weather meaning that Cashmere needed to travel via Kaikoura to avoid the snow, and a last minute rustle round for billets, it was fabulous to welcome the Cashmere teams and staff to Waimea College. Always causing a bit of apprehension for those with students to billet and to be billeted, it was great to see new friendships and connections being made off the sports field.

Waimea turned on some great weather with only a little rain. With wins for the Senior A boys Basketball and 1st XI Boys Football and losses for the Senior A Netball and 1st XI Girls Football it was all down to the Girls Senior A Basketball team in the final seconds of the game. The sideline support from both schools was loud and encouraging and one of the many highlights of the exchange. Congratulations to all teams that took part.

Waimea was delighted to take the shield, the first time since 2017. This exchange with Cashmere began in 1959. There was a gap between 1971 and 2013 with Waimea having the shield 9 times and Cashmere 10 times over the years previously. With a win for Waimea this year, we are now 10 each.

Thank you Cashmere High School Sport for travelling up the long way to compete.
