Upcoming Educational Decisions for Waimea College

Brian Hore —

As you may be aware, the New Zealand Curriculum and NCEA Qualification Standards are changing.

We have recently seen the introduction of the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum and next year will see the start of the new Literacy and Numeracy co-requisites for NCEA. Over the next 3 years we will see changes in pedagogy across all areas of the curriculum, as well as the resulting new NCEA Standards at Level 1, 2 and 3.

With these changes, Waimea College is looking into some of the implications for our students and of our own practices. We will be looking for your input into these later in the year.

The areas we will be looking for feedback on will be:

NCEA Level 1 – Does this qualification still have relevance and need in our community?
Te Reo and Tikanga Māori – How do we best ensure our students are learning in these areas?
Extension and Mixed Ability Classes – What is the most appropriate way to cater for all students’ diverse abilities?

We have our Curriculum Team currently putting together information to provide you for feedback. This will include an outline of our current practices and some information and research into the best practice in these areas.

We expect to be reaching out to you for your views later this term and will keep you updated as we continue the process.
