Wellbeing at Waimea College

Paula Campbell —

At Waimea College we explicitly teach and learn wellbeing during Ako lessons.

Wellbeing
Wellbeing is recognised as a key part of helping students succeed at school and fits strongly within the Waimea College values of Caring, Learning and Belonging. The New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience defines wellbeing as 'feeling good and functioning well'. There are many tools our young people can use to be well which they will be exploring throughout the year. In Ako this term, students will all learn about the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, which you can read more about here: Wellbeing - Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand

Growth Mindset
One of the key skills of a well mind is the ability to have a growth mindset when learning new skills. A student with a growth mindset knows their brain is always developing and has the potential to learn new things all their life. To learn how to use growth mindset language with your teen, check out Growth Mindset For Parents | Growth Mindset Parenting (mindsetworks.com) or for a general introduction, watch Growth Mindset Introduction: What it is, How it Works, and Why it Matters - YouTube
