All the latest news from the Sports Department

Our Junior Volleyball teams have had a great season with three teams entered in the Junior South Island Champs in Dunedin. The Junior Gold Girls went into the tournament as the top Nelson seed and the Junior Boys second seed.  We are thrilled to report that the Junior Gold Girls placed 1st in Div 1 - with Hannah Granger named Tournament MVP, and both she and Maddie Seymour were selected for the Tournament team. The Junior Boys placed 12th in Div 1, and the Junior Green Girls 11th place in Div I.

A huge congratulations to Jobe McAuley for his selection into the New Zealand Junior Men’s Indoor Asian Volleyball Championships Squad and to Seb Lams who was named in the Junior Men’s New Zealand Development Squad to play in the 2024 Australian State Championships.

The Senior A Boys Volleyball team will be travelling to Australia in December, having been invited to the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup on the back of their successful 2nd placing at the NZSS Nationals earlier in the year. The Australian Volleyball Schools Cup (AVSC) is the largest school-based sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting teams from across Australia, plus international teams.

The Girls 7s team qualified to attend the Condors 7s Nationals, which are being held in Mount Maunganui on 2 - 3 December. This is the first time a Waimea girls' team have qualified for this event. Good luck to Ella Brereton, Samara Bright, Makenna Holland, Brooke Hutchinson, Sophie Pemberton, Liana Peychers, Kasaea Pilo, Destiny Sproul, Jade Urquhart and Monique Venter.

The Get2Go team travel to Tongariro to compete at the Get2Go Nationals at the start of December, having earned a place in the Torpedo7 Get2Go National Final.  This event is held over 5 days and is an intense week made up of problem solving and team challenge activities, plus a 2-day expedition adventure race including an overnight camp with the other teams. Best of luck to Zoe Bonny, Taylor Clements, Oliver Costley, Ben Elliot, Caleb Heath, Talei Kinzett, Cameron Lukey and Petra Lukey.

We have a strong squad of athletes entered in the NZ Secondary Schools Athletics Champs which are taking place in Christchurch in December. NZSS Beach Volleyball is held at Mount Maunganui on 3 - 4 February 2024 and Seb Lams and Jobe McAuley will be travelling to this event to compete.

Tasman Secondary School Junior Cricket tournament – with a change in format, meaning lots of cricket, the boys played a total of six T14 games, finishing undefeated for their efforts.

The following Year 11/12 boys were selected for the Nelson Cricket Representative team (previously U17) heading to Napier in December. Congratulations to Bryn Thurlow ©, Cam McLean, Carl Quinn, Gus Bixley, Eddy Cox and Josh Gill. The team is coached by Mr Brad Norris. The team got off to a good start, beating Marlborough in their first game (which counts towards the tournament results).

Nelson Y9/10 Girls Cricket team – Congratulations to Poppy Deaker and Summa Pratt for being named in this team to head to Palmerston North from the 13-15 December.

Nelson Y11/12 Girls Cricket team – Abi Platt, Madison Greenaway and Summa Pratt will represent Nelson Cricket from the 17-19 December in Whanganui.

Abi Platt and Giselle Rynvos were members of the very successful Canterbury United Women’s Youth team who won the 2023 Girls National League recently. What a great result!

Finally, all the best to our Year 13 students who leave this year and to the fabulous Sports Captains of 2023. Thank you for your support, enthusiasm, and contribution to Waimea College Sport.
