We’re proud to celebrate the amazing efforts and accomplishments of our students across a wide range of sports during the past month. From national championships to representative honours, our Waimea athletes have made their mark!
Target Shooting
Congratulations to Tyde Maihi, who recently won the South Island Championship in D Grade. An outstanding result!
NZSS Swimming Championships
A huge well done to:
Maddie Seymour – Gold in the 50m Backstroke
Mia Cain-Townley – Silver in both50m Butterfly and 100m Butterfly
Well done also to Bella Cain-Townley and Ella Clements for proudly representing Waimea College at this event.
SISS Junior Netball Tournament
Our 9A and 10A teams travelled to Christchurch in the first week of the holidays to take on schools from across the South Island.
9A finished 8th overall and were awarded the Sportsmanship Runner-Up Award – a wonderful achievement!
10A finished 27th, showing strong development in both skill and game understanding.
The trip is always a highlight and wouldn’t be possible without the amazing support from coaches, managers, and whānau – thank you!
National School Track Cycling Championships
Noah Eden (U15 Boys) – 5th Overall
Lucas Ippolito (U16 Boys) – 6th Overall
This championship followed an omnium format, where consistent performance across five races was key. Excellent racing and results from both riders!
Rugby
Congratulations to Sophie Pemberton on her selection into the NZ U18 Girls Rugby High Performance Pathway Camp – a significant recognition of her talent and potential.
Cross Country
Well done to Ava Lausen, who competed at the NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Whangārei in June. Representing Waimea at this level is a fantastic achievement!
Basketball – National Representation
Congratulations to all our students who travelled for representative basketball over the holidays:
Nelson U16 Girls: Maddy Tolson, Lily James – competed at the Nationals in Wellington.
Nelson U16 Boys: Cooper Hope, Eli Sinclair, Chase Tauwhare – also represented at Nationals in Wellington.
Nelson U18 Boys: Harry Thomas – represented Nelson U18 at Nationals in Christchurch.

U16 Development Team – Jayden Hansen, Isaac McKean
U16B Girls – Mackenzie Cullen

Netball – National Representation
Congratulations to Kady Thurlow, Mya Elmiger, and Maia Nicholson, who were members of the Nelson U18 Netball teamthat travelled to Auckland for Nationals.
Cameron Lukey and Quinn Heiford are once again heading to the US to represent the New Zealand region at the Babe Ruth World Series 16U Baseball tournament. They are flying into Dallas, Texas for some initial warm-up games with the Texas Rangers Youth Academy, then onto Branson, Missouri for the tournament where they will play teams from Mexico, Korea, Australia and the US to name a few.
Cam and Quinn are the only players from the South Island to be named in this New Zealand representative team. They have been supported this year by a number of local businesses including very generous sponsorship from Heartland Fruit.

Hayden Jones – named in the latest Tall Blacks Basketball Squad
Holly Chandler, Katie Adamson, Seb Lams, Jobe McAuley – all selected as New Zealand Volleyball Representatives
Keyle Brown – Umpired at the NZ Under 18 Netball Nationals
Greta Meikle – Umpired at the NZ Under 18 Netball Nationals and was awarded a Netball NZ Centre Award at this event.
