Special Education

Sarah Kennedy —

The Special Education department offers a wide range of activities to reflect the diversity of our students' abilities and ages.

Our students are entitled to keep learning at College until the end of their 21st year. This allows time for an individualised Transition programme to be developed which reflects how the student wants to live when they graduate. The Food for Flatters programme focuses on healthy, simple food students can make and enjoy with friends.
Megan has made a spectacular meal, set the table, cleared up and is ready for lunch.

Finding out what is on offer in the community for fitness and leisure is also an important aspect for our senior students. Jack Doocey demonstrates the correct boxing stance at Paul Hampton’s boxing clinic as part of the Sport Tasman Inclusive Sports Programme. Students try a different community activity each week.

Our Outdoor Education Programme is specifically adapted to teach team work, fitness, technique, problem-solving and resilience. Students enjoy trying all the activities available in our amazing region.

Art is an important part of creativity, wellbeing and self expression. We are lucky to have a talented mainstream Art Teacher, Ms Goodwin, to show us different techniques and possibilities.

Maths is crucial for managing money. It takes a lot of practice and a wee bit of help.

Part of our physiotherapy programme involves using the gym near Nelson Intermediate school. The foam pit provides a solid cardio work out when trying to get to the side and also provides a chill out zone when needed.

This year, because of Covid restrictions, our camp didn’t include staying overnight, but we did have two days of Teapot Valley activities during the day. A huge thankyou to our Special Education Captains and Leaders who came to help out and have some fun. We especially enjoyed their Talent Show Jump Jam item. See below for more pics from camp.
