Careers/Transition

Dan Crossley —

Information and advice on future career paths and training opportunities is readily available for all parents and students from Careers staff.

Resources are available on most career and job ideas, as well as publications (including Prospectus and Study Guides) from New Zealand Universities, Institutes of Technology and other training providers.

Students are able to access Career information from appropriate websites accessed from Waimea College CareerWise. All students and their parents are able to make individual appointments with the Careers Adviser, Dan Crossley dan.crossley@waimea.school.nz.

Students are also encouraged to check up-coming events via daily notices, CareerWise and noticeboards.

Year 13 students are encouraged to use the link to access the Money Hub website, (there is also a link provided in CareerWise - Scholarships and Student Loans tab) which contains detailed information on scholarships available throughout New Zealand to fund future tertiary study.

University Liaison Visits
The first round of visits from tertiary institutions from all over the country have commenced. Please check the daily notices and/or Careerwise for when the next ones are to be held.

University and Tertiary Provider Open Days
Universities, polytechnics, and tertiary providers usually hold Open Days and Information Sessions for prospective students. Year 13 students are encouraged to attend these if they are considering tertiary study in the future. It is important to check out the individual institutions’ websites for full information on when and where these events are being held. The University Information Evenings dates in Nelson are to be advised.

Gateway
This year we have Gateway programmes in both Year 12 and 13. Two of our students are participating in Service IQs Red Shirts programme in conjunction with The Warehouse.
This involves one day a week placement in work. This programme will provide students with 23 Level 2 credits, based around retail skills. Picture are Callum Cousins and Ashley Lane during their placement.
