Waimea College Sports

Karla Thurlow —

Winter Codes

The Waimea Combined 1st XV have now had 4 wins in a row and are playing some great rugby.  Their next home games are against Christ’s College 2nd XV on 29 June and 6 July against Cashmere High.

The second half of the season sees the U14 and U15 Combined teams competing under the Waimea Combined banner, with players coming together from several schools.

The U15 team have had a couple of wins and the U14 teams have played some great rugby and scored plenty of tries.

Cross Country

Well done to our athletes who competed in Christchurch in the NZSS Cross Country National Champs. Congratulations to each of you, who recorded impressive times in huge fields.

Results were:
Hazel Hunt - 14th, Year 9 Girls
Sophie McKeever - 18th, Junior Girls
Bella Cain-Townley - 28th, Junior Girls
Ava Lausen - 49th, Junior Girls
Oliver Costley - 16th Junior Boys

The Tasman Junior Mixed Relay team which included 3 Waimea students (Oliver Costley, Ava Lausen, Sophie McKeever) and one Nelson College student (Liam Dunbar) also managed to secure a bronze medal!

Senior Ki o Rahi

For the second year running the Senior Ki o Rahi team took the TSS Ki o Rahi Championship trophy – congratulations to Harrison Carmichael, Madison Greenaway, Tessa Honey, Harry Horncastle, Riley McCuish-Hocking, Cam McLean, Tommy McLean, Alice Mitchener, Grace Shirley, Destiny Sproul.

TSS Golf

The teams travelled to Marlborough to play in this tournament, competing in both the Div I and Div II champs with the Div II title going to the Waimea Boys.

TSS Indoor Cricket

The Senior boys came through strong to finish victorious in the Senior TSS Indoor Cricket Championship.   (Gus Bixley, Lachlan Greenaway, Tommy McFarlane, Cam McLean, Carl Quinn, Bryn Thurlow).

TSS Equestrian

The Waimea Wildcats (Adele Chaplin, Kiara Hardman, Jasmine Phillips, Kamryn Shea) finished 6th overall and third in dressage at the Tasman Secondary School Equestrian Champs in Blenheim, which was a fantastic team result. Morgan Wells was first overall in Level 1 Dressage and Scarlett Rodd first overall in Level 2 Dressage. It was a fun event with almost twice as many entries this year compared to last year.

Marlborough Girls Exchange

It was Marlborough’s turn to travel to Waimea to compete in the annual exchange.  With a loss for the Football girls and Senior A Netball (narrow loss by one) and a win for the Hockey team – the Jan Gallop Trophy returned to Marlborough.

Cashmere Exchange

Another successful exchange was held with Cashmere High, and it is always a pleasure to have such great sportsmanship, camaraderie and new friendships forged.  Waimea won the netball, hockey and boys basketball, and had losses in the girls basketball and boys football.  With Cashmere and Waimea even on the number of times that the shield has been won since 1959, the tussle is bound to be fierce in Christchurch next year.

Thank you to both Marlborough Girls and Cashmere High for travelling to Waimea this year.
