Sarah Kennedy —

It's been a busy term!

Last week the SPED Outdoor Education students camped at Cable Bay for the final part of their programme. This year they have worked hard on improving their fitness in all sorts of weather, climbing and abseiling, orienteering, learning correct steering and paddling in canoes, extending their bike skills (Hamish Stamp learned how to ride a bike this year), cooking on trangias and putting up a tent that stays up!

Packing the correct gear independently was a crucial contributor to having fun. Keane said he’s proudest of facing his fears and sleeping in a tent for the first time. Aliyah noted that it was hard to put the poles through the tent sleeves, but she was pleased her tent stayed up. Ellen was proud of walking ‘for hours’ up and down the Cable Bay walkway and paddling her canoe in a straight line!

On Monday, students presented a snapshot of their learning across the year to their whānau and friends in the first Showcase in three years!
Lily conquered her nerves in her drama skit, James Drummond played “Reach for the Stars” on the electronic keyboard, and all the students excelled at karakia and poi activities. Seqouia talked about her favourite character, the Artful Dodger, from the Charles Dickens novel, Oliver Twist, and students explained about who the College Houses were named after. Our Transition students presented a video about their work across the year, including photos of the weta lodges they made for a community project, and their work at the allotment.
Molly said the best part for her was the” Evolution of dance” item. She said she had to remember heaps of different steps in the right order. Bailey commented that he was concentrating on making sure he made the poi swing in the right direction and that it didn’t hit him in the face!

Tūmeke to all the performers!
