Regional Rockquest

We are delighted to report on two further awards that were presented during the Rockquest Regionals; Smeez Angels won the ZM Best Song Award and Sam Sumich (Clear to Engage) won the APRA Lyric Writer’s Award for their band’s song ‘Trapped’.
A great effort – congratulations!

Nelson District Showquest – Toi competition, by Fritha Johnson

As a part of the Showquest competition in June, a Wearable Arts competition called ‘Toi’ was also held. I entered in the Open Category with a garment called ‘Posy Rouge’.
My story was of a housewife who became fed-up with her hopeless husband in the midst of getting ready and decided to storm out of the house to buy herself a bunch of flowers. I used tulle and organza ruffles to make a puffy, 1950s petticoat inspired dress.
Ms Hall gifted me a lot of fabric from the Textiles cupboard, and I used my PFT learning to design the garment. Although I chose to sew most of it at home, I had great support from my teachers to help get it done. On the day of Showquest, I got to see my friends who were competing in the dance, get photos of my wearable art taken, and enjoy my time there.

Hanmer Springs Winter Festival, by Paige Gallacher

On 6 and 7 July, the Waimea College Choir and Jazz Band drove down together on a bus to Hanmer Springs for the annual Winter Festival. We had three performances scheduled for the people of Hanmer to enjoy which included four songs from the Choir – The Greatest Show from The Greatest Showman, Shape of You by Ed Sheeran, a mash-up of Easy On Me by Adele and Marry You by Bruno Mars, and Katy Perry’s Rise with a different arrangement. Two pieces were performed by the Jazz Band, Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars and Arnge Drank (Orange Juice with Attitude) by Paul Baker, and there was also one bonus song from a few of students who formed a band and played Johnny B. Goode which was enjoyed by all.
