Debating
Waimea College teams had a very successful Kahurangi-Marlborough regional tournament. Debating topics as diverse as, “This House would fine the parents of students with chronically low attendance” and “This House would implement a four-year Parliamentary term in NZ” to, “This House prefers a world with no extreme emotions”. They pitted their wits against 14 other teams of all ages from all around the region.
We had two teams competing, but it was the Year 10/11 team of Hamish Cobb, Louis Roper and Will Fisher (supported earlier by Frederik Kwee) who made the Junior final, arguing in favour of “This House would cease all spending on space exploration.” Although they didn’t get the win, they made a worthy showing.
Our Senior team of Eise Tijsen, Lee Purdie and Roy Inwood had three wins out of four debates, but the real success of the day for us came with the naming of Eise Tijsen in the Regional team to go to the Nationals in Wellington in May, from which a New Zealand team will be chosen.
