Year 8 Career Expo

Denise Lee —

On Thursday 10th of August all of the Year 8's had the opportunity to go around the school to different classrooms to listen to parents of our students talk about their careers.  Each students was able to choose 3 options.  I was lucky enough to listen to an ECE Kindy teacher, a nurse and a policeman.  They told us all about the skills that are need for the job, to training and if the job would be a good option in the future.  Overall this was a great experience and I really enjoyed it.

Lance Double is a solar technician.  The skills needed for this job are maths, good with your hands and communication. You need a good attitude, not scared of heights and able to listen to instructions. School subjects to take are maths, computer science and technology. It takes 2 -3 years to be fully trained.

I went to Lance he was talking about solar panels and it was really interesting. It costs $6000 or $7,000 to put solar panels on your on the house and $25,000 to put a battery in. People put solar panels facing the north to get it in the morning and at night.

For the career expo I went to listen to Chris about nursing, she told us about her job and what she does.  To become a nurse it takes about 3 years of studying and 8 years in total.  To be a nurse you have to be calm in any situation, respectful, show care about what you are doing and have a good sense of humour.  To become a qualified nurse you need to have a nursing degree/masters degree.  You need to be able to get your Maths, English and Science points.  You need to able to use technology because there are lots of computers and machines in the hospitals.

Hi my name is Van and I went to banking with Simon Reiter yesterday and it was really cool and I learnt heaps of new things. We learnt that if you bought a brand new Hilux like how much it would cost monthly and if you borrow money you have to pay nearly double the money back to the bank. He also talked about the price of rice going up so that means the price of sushi and Asian food will go up. So with oil!!! He was really good at explaining with banking and savings. We really enjoyed this and we thank Simon for using up his time to teach us.

PJ’s House of Fades - Thank you, PJ, for coming and teaching us about being a barber. We learnt about the training and time it takes to be a barber. You also told us about how enjoyable cutting hair can be. Some other tips you gave us were to be ourselves and be creative. We thank you for giving us a free haircut, that was very kind.

Lorna Heath registered nurse. For this job I learnt about what hobbies or activities that could lead you towards this later in life. This could be starting somewhere small like being a clinical nurse and ACC rehab nurse or other nursing jobs. I now understand that volunteering with St Johns doing active things and team activities that could strengthen your connection with patients and other nurses. To be qualified to get into nursing you need to have training in theory class, write exams and have a 3 year degree at university. It definitely helps to stay focused if you are interested in what you are learning. I like the fact that it will still involve people in the future and how it has changed over the years. I now know that there are different ways to be a nurse some are very strict and high pay while others are a little more flexible with a little less pay. I’ve realised that you have to make some difficult decisions and sacrifices to give people the care that they need. There are a lot of scary and life changing decisions that sometimes don’t give you the outcome you were expecting. I’m still not completely sure what I want to be when I grow up but learning about nursing and other jobs give me many options to choose from.

I met a business owner called Emily yesterday and she talked about her business, where she has a shop of outdoors gear and some outdoor activities like rock climbing. She kept saying never do a job you don't like, or you won't have a great life. She also told us that you should always love what you are selling, or you probably won't sell as much as someone who likes the product they are selling. I would probably do this job because you get to meet new people and get to learn a lot about them and there are a lot of cool products in the shop. The only thing she said was boring for her was accounting. It seems it would be a bit boring for me too. She also said that she had to go through a lot of stuff to get where she is today; she needed to go to N.M.I.T and she also needed a mentor. Some skills I'll need to have to get into this job will be to be good at communicating and listening skills plus I will need promotion skills. So, if I want this job I will go to college and pick up heaps of these skills on the way.
