WIS SPORT

WIS CROSS COUNTRY

This year we ran the cross country in 2 parts, the first being the competitive race where students could have the chance at representing the school at the interschool events. The students ran a 2 lap course around the school with some impressive running from the top runners in these races. WIS will be sending a strong team to compete against more talented runners from around Nelson.

Well done to our top 3 in each Year group:

Yr7 Girls

1st - Brooke Hutchinson, 2nd Violette Rynvos, 3rd Ava Lausen

Yr7 Boys

1st - Finn Pickering, 2nd Oliver Costley, 3rd Jet Beaumont

Yr8 Girls

1st - Bella Cain-Townley, 2nd Freya Childerhouse, 3rd Makayla Sheridan

Yr8 Boys

1st - Cody McPherson, 2nd Zach Redpath, 3rd Will Bay

The top 20 runners in each group have now qualified to the interschool events, the first being the Interschool Relays which are held at Rabbit Island on Friday 25th June, the second is the Individual Interschool Cross Country Race at Rabbit Island happening on Friday 2nd July. You should have received an email about this if your child made it through, they will be competing on both events.

The afternoon was about participation and having fun while running. This year we set up a 1 lap fun course that all students could have a go at.

The front field was full of obstacles for our students to go through, such as a cargo net to crawl under, beams and boxes to jump over, water station where people were squirting water guns at you and dodgeball alley. It was great watching the students compete in this with smiles on their faces.

We also had some local heroes come along to help support and encourage our runners, so would like to thank Tim King (Tasman Mayor), Dawn Chalmers (NZ top female boxer and MMA fighter), Stephani Mitchell (Women's Mako player), Constable Marcus and Constable Hamish, Coral (our amazing school Librarian) and we had G.I. Ant from the Nelson Giants come out and have some fun with us.

It was a successful day and thanks to the parents that came along to support, it is always great to hear lots of encouragement given to those that take part.

WESTERN FORCE PLAYERS

Last week our rugby players at WIS got to meet two Western Force super Rugby players Bo Abra and Henry Taefu.

We all gathered in the hall where our students got to ask the super rugby players some questions and then had the opportunity to get a photo and signatures.

It was another great opportunity for our students to hear about the effort that athletes need to put in to be at the top level of their sport.
