Saxton Relays

Jon Linyard —

Congratulations to everyone who competed in the fourth running of the Saxton Relays.

Waimea runners teamed up impressively to record a victory, two seconds and two third placings in the days four races. Each event saw fifteen teams on the start line with a number of country schools from the Tasman Basin striving to beat the local intermediates.

In the Year 7 girls’ race Shannan Delany, Charli Mirfin, Maia Kininmonth and Julia Kersten were narrowly beaten by an impressive Nelson Intermediate. Third place went to Shay Samuels, Zoe Clark, Isla Woodwiss and Charlotte Taylor with a well-executed team effort. The Year 7 boys’ team of James O’Malley, James Johnson, Joe Appleton and Reichan Scott ran strongly throughout to also take second place.

The two closest match-ups of the day occurred in the Year 8 girls’ and boys’ events. Samantha Harman anchored Lilly Zwart, Mackenzie Taylor and Rylee Young in a superb run that was only decided five metres from the finish line. Jayden Pemberton’s team with both Adam and Joseph Clatworthy and Matthew Bowen fought throughout to eventually finish a close second, whilst Sam Shelling, Ryley Marsh, Blake Hawke and Karl Palmer were impressive taking out third.

All teams representing Waimea performed with distinction against an array of impressive talent.
