Room 8 Camping at Totaranui

Lesley Smith —

Last week, Room 8 camped at Totaranui in the fantastic Abel Tasman National Park. We had the opportunity to try all sorts of activities. Have you ever tried pitching a tent blindfolded? We can show you how. Unfortunately the rain stopped us from sleeping in them! Kayaking in the rain, tramping to Separation Point, eating awesome food, lack of sleep and those naughty wekas!

A highlight for us students was going through the mud flats and getting to the end neck down caked in stinky, black silt and mud. When the rain continued for two days we didn’t let it stop us. Orienteering and a blind folded mystery walk tested the quality of our rain jackets. Instead of another night playing games at the ‘field of pain’ we played a real life game of Cluedo, the parents and teachers wore amazing costumes that had been secretly packed in amongst their camp gear. We saw dolphins and seals and so much more. The students are really grateful to all the teachers and parents that came to the camp, they worked hard, had as much fun as we did. Totaranui 2021 will be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
