Room 14 Tramp to Richmond Fire Lookout

Eric Strachan —

On Friday the 24th May, a keen group of Room 14 students embarked on a challenge. Their challenge was to walk from school and climb up bush clad Reservoir Gully, located behind Easby Park, to the Richmond Fire Lookout. The return trip was via the remnant bush gully called Jimmy Lee Creek.

Students learned about the old Richmond water supply reservoir, fish ladders, erosion, revegetation projects, trapping of pests, invasive weeds, the role of native birds in spreading the seeds, ……… but most of all they learned about themselves. They learned how to face a challenge, persevere and reach a goal. They learned how to support people who are finding things harder than them.

We were very lucky to have fine weather and 5 awesome parents who made this trip a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved. Without these parents and grandparents, the trip would not have gone ahead.

Back at school at the end of the day some very tired kids blobbed out chatting and playing quite games when the teacher, Mr Strachan, asked them to rate their tramp. Thumbs up meant it was awesome, thumbs horizontal meant it was ok, Thumbs down meant it was awful! Every kid made a thumbs up gesture and Mr Strachan said that made all the work involved worthwhile!
