Room 1's descriptive narratives.

Denise Lee —

In Room 1 we have been learning how to write a descriptive narratives and compliment them with line drawing art. Here a few examples that we hope you enjoy.

My head is pounding… I can’t see. My nose is filled with overwhelming scents of fish and coconuts. I can't see! Panic makes my heart beat against my ribcage. My hands move, sifting silky sand through my bruised fingers. Waves are crashing in the distance, singing a lullaby. My eyes fly open, remembering it all. I see a clear blue sky and fluffy clouds. I sit up slowly, dragging my heavy arms with me. Crystal green water reaches my soaked shoes and seeps into my socks. I shiver and look around at the Palm trees swaying in the gentle breeze. It was gorgeous  but where was I? Where was my family?

I find myself facing the jungle of big trees and unknown creatures. I needed to find fresh water quickly or I'd suffer from dehydration. The sun was glaring down on my already sensitive skin. I trudge forward slowly into the undergrowth of the towering trees. I hear a rustle and I jump, wondering what I was. A long furry tail poked out from under a bush covered in round red berries . I bend down and see two eyes looking back at me. Suddenly the animal lunges out at me and claws at my legs. I cry out and shake my legs, trying to fling the thing off of me. Blood forms in thin streaks on my calves, I run deeper into the darkening jungle.Suddenly I trip over a vine  and face plant into a wet pile of mud, I spit out the watery mud and cough in disgust. I stood up, newfound hope, where there was mud, there had to be water. If I found water I could drink and clear up my leg.

After walking for a bit longer I found water, real water. A wave of relief washes over me. I drink and drink, feeling fresher and cleaner. I gasp as a sharp stabbing pain hits my arm, I look and scream, There's a snake dangling off my arm, teeth deep into the burned flesh of my forearm. The bite throbs with immense pain,  I shriek and rip the snake off my arm, I drop down to the water, hands shaking uncontrollably. I bathe the swollen bite and sob heart thumping. “I'm gonna die” I think silently to myself.

I rise from the ground, staring at the two purpling holes. My vision starts to double and I wobble a bit on my feet. I stumble away from the water, I’ll get lost in here. After almost falling over about 1,000 times, I made it. I glance at my arm, scared to see the damage… It;s covered in purple lines like veins, spreading up my arm. I’m fully delirious now, I throw up, then again, but I have nothing to throw up, so I retch. Falling to the ground sweating, I’m not going to make it much longer. I lay on my back giving in. I close my eyes and lie still, the bite still pulsing with venom.

I hear a distorted siren from above me, I force open my eyes, my vision still blurry, nothing actually making sense. Something told me I needed to yell for help. The creepy siren that didn’t sound right was still blaring above me. I raise my hand yelp at the piercing stabs of pain holler

“ Here! I'm here! A helicopter appears in my peripheral vision, only seeing a blur of red and blue. I jump up, adrenaline fueling me. Still bellowing as loud as I can, falling but getting up again.

As it lands, two people leap out racing towards me. A woman catches as I fall again, dragging me to the helicopter with help from another man. Commanding voices muffled by the chopper. I see nothing, I hear nothing, but I feel pain, blinding pain. That's all I remember.

Now I stand here, alone and grief ridden. I got rescued by the people looking for my family. I was found. My family was not. I peer at my arm, swallowing hard. There’s still two small circle sized scars, reminiscent of the horrors I lived through. Tears prick my eyes, emotion overcoming me. I step to a window and stare at the town below me,

The beautiful sun setting behind the wavy hills opposite me.

Freezing water lapping over my hand snaps me back into consciousness. I sit up and rest my soaking head on my hand,I can feel  a small droplet of water trickle down my face and drip off my chin. A warm breeze dries my clothes and rustles the branches of the trees behind me. As I look over I see them swaying, their leaves dancing gracefully.I hear gentle waves crashing over the golden sand and taste the salty tang of sea water in my mouth. I feel calm and peaceful as  birds chirp happily soaking in the warm golden rays of the sun. I stand up and look at my surroundings,I'm on an island, “how?” I wonder as I take in the view of it all.

Slowly I make my way to the middle of the island where I had heard the trees. As I enter the dense forest I realise that the trees I had seen before were fruit trees! Their glossy red apples hang to the branches just asking to be picked. So I reach up and take one. Its sweet flavour dances in my mouth as I take a bite.Full now I continue my stroll inwards through the forest I can hear hidden critters scuffling the leaves on the ground and birds weaving their nests high in the trees. It sounds like a song . It feels like a dream. All of a sudden a glimmer catches in the corner of my eye,I can hear it. A tiny stream trickling in the dense forest floor. I kneel down and dip my hands into the shimmering clear blue water.

The stream isn’t tiny I realise, in fact it's not a stream at all,it's a river! I step back in surprise but the rough stony ground beneath my feet gives way. A waterfall of pebbles and spiky stones sweeps me off balance  and I plunge into the icy cold water! Gasping for air I try to stand up but the strong current grips at me and drags me under again! As I finally find my balance on the slimy rocky surface  I realise that the river has swept me far downstream, slowly step after step ,after step being careful not to slip I make my way to the  river bank and lie across the warm stones. Once my breath has steadied I sit up and look around, tall trees surround me, their sturdy trunks towering above. There are no birds here. There is no sign of life anywhere … but I am safe!

Shakily I stand up and wring out my drenched hair, the cold water drips down my back. As I restart  my walk through the forest I figure that it's not a forest anymore. The trees tower above me and vine swing down from the thick canopy. It’s a jungle. “Help!” I know nobody there to hear my desperate call, but I'm cold, tired, soaking, and lost. Yet again when I start my trek I can hear the leaves rustling of the trees above my head. The thick canopy slowly thins out as the dense Jungle turns into a forest, next a beach, then I'm back where I first got stranded! Closing my eyes I listen to the waves crashing against distant rocks, the birds still singing their happy tunes ,and a voice. I open my eyes, startled to see a small rescue boat bobbing in the water in front of me.I collapse to the ground and the golden sand burns on my hands but I don't care!

The steady sound of the motor carrying me back home soothes me, as the waves rock the boat. I'm safe and I'm going home!

I wake up feeling something slimy on me.What could it be? It was seaweed. I remember getting washed off my boat on my family holiday. I look around and see the rapid waves crashing against the shore. I'm feeling hot and I smell sweat and BO. My brain is confused from hearing all the seagulls screeching and the coconuts thudding in the sand. My nose is burning from the smell of salty water. I stick my tongue out and taste the raw sandy seaweed rummaging around in my mouth. I am as confused  as a riddle without an answer.

I rustle through the smooth bushes running into an itchy spider web. I rub my eyes and notice colourful flowers surrounding a clear water fall. The sounds of birds singing is magical. I smell honey coming from a nearby bee hive.

Suddenly a hideous monster roars and stomps out of the rocky waterfall. I bent down, grabbed a sharp stick and slowly stepped backwards. The creature is spiky and has warts all over it. Then I felt my shaky legs trapped! I am stuck in quicksand! This is bad. There's a monster coming for me and I'm sinking in quicksand! Who's gonna save me?

Then a rescue helicopter flew noisily over the rustling trees. The terrified monster covered its floppy ears and ran into the fresh waterfall. I grin and wave while the serious men lower a rope down to me. As I am nearly head deep I grab the rough rope and they haul me up out of the cold quicksand. I step into the shaky helicopter and thank the men. They nod and take me back home to my delighted, wet family.

Phew! I'm glad I'm home. Now that I think of it I could have been eaten or suffocated if that helicopter came even 1 second later. I really, really thank those men. Wait.. How did they know I was there!? I'm never going on a boat again.
