WIS SPORT

Jemma Taikato —

Welcome back to Term 2 Sport

Netball

WIS have 12 Netball teams this year which is huge.

Netball starts this Saturday 3rd May. All teams now have coaches and we're still working on managers for a few teams. The players have all collected their Netball Dresses this week.

Grading will happen for the first 3 weeks, so the draw will be done weekly until this is sorted.

Please remember that this is Intermediate grade Netball and not the Silver Ferns, please keep the sideline positive and support your team and child.

"If you see Pink Stop and Think" is the motto from Nelson Netball this year!

You can find the draw on the Nelson Netball Website https://www.nelsonnetball.co.nz/competitions-1/draws-results-standings-all-grades

Thanks to all coaches and managers that have stepped up to take one of our WIS teams, we really appreciate your support in this.

Basketball

Basketball starts on Monday 5th May.

All players need to make sure they have a mouth guard for the games.

We are still looking for a few coaches for teams. If you know of anyone wanting to coach a team please let Jemma know -Jemmat@waimeaint.school.nz

Singlets will be handed out to the teams on Friday at school.

I will be down at Basketball for the first few weeks to assist teams on learning to do the score bench.

Please read this from Nelson Basketball on how the first night will run this year.

Over recent seasons, Nelson Basketball have seen a welcome increase in Intermediate basketball team numbers. However, this growth has highlighted a shortage of confident coaches within this age group. To better support our coaches — many of whom are parent volunteers — we will be holding a Coach Development Evening on Monday, 5 May, during the first night of the All-Star Ball competition.

Event Structure:

  • A draw will be created, similar to a regular competition night, to allocate teams a timeslot and manage group sizes.

  • Players will participate in a 15-minute skills session on Court 3, led by experienced coaches.

  • Simultaneously, team coaches will attend a 15-minute development workshop on Court 1 with our coach development team.

  • Following the sessions, teams will return to their allocated courts to apply the skills learnt, with support from the coach developers.

  • If time and confidence allow, teams may finish with a friendly scrimmage. (No scores will be recorded, and games will not impact competition points.)

The purpose of this evening is to ensure coaches feel well-supported and confident as the season begins, ultimately enhancing the experience for all involved.
