The Food Factory – ‘Aroha in a Jar’

Jo Townsend —

Last Friday eleven Food Extension students had the wonderful opportunity of going to Pic’s ‘The Food Factory’ to produce 100 Banoffee Pies in a jar. We worked in one of the four commercial kitchens and got a real life experience of food manufacture on a large scale.

Year 8s are currently working on a Manaakitanga project which encourages students to extend love and compassion to others through food. Some students make their ‘Aroha in a Jar’ for a parent or family member whilst others prepare and make them for the local community.

This week the jars were taken to ‘Giving Aroha in Anzac Park’ as part of their second birthday celebrations. Here the homeless community or those people looking for a delicious, hot meal amongst friends gather every Sunday at 4pm. One of the regular volunteers is Alice Ladley a Year 7 WIS student who has been attending with her parents every Sunday this term rain or shine and it has been mainly rain!

A huge thank you to Pic and his team for their ongoing support of Food Technology here at WIS. Big thanks also to local companies who donated ingredients to make this happen. Cream from Aunt Jeans/Oakland milk, bananas from PYO at 185, biscuit crumbs from Bidfood and Nicoya’s mom Jade McBride at the Duck In Lunch Bar for her ongoing support.
