STIMELA – Gumboot Dancing from Soweto

Jane Merryfisher —

On Monday we had a surprise visit. The school was treated unexpectedly to a captivating performance from the cast of the South African musical, ‘Stimela'.

The voices of ten men filled the hall without any amplification, singing in rich harmony, accompanied by African rhythms played on a drum and a marimba. Then they danced frenetically in their gumboots – like an African version of ’Stomp’.

Gumboot dancing is a tradition developed by the workers in the coal mines of Soweto, and after the show, one of the cast members took some of our students for a gumboot dancing workshop, which engaged all the students for the entire session.

The school was abuzz with the joyous energy of the performance, long after they left.
