Kia ora e te whānau!
Welcome back to another busy term full of opportunities and celebrations.
2024 was a year of growth for us as a kura, introducing new learning opportunities for tauira (students) and kaimahi (staff) alongside many kaimahi taking personal learning journeys outside of school.
Our rangatahi (young people) shared with us the joy they got out of our groups, modules, and Education Outside the Classroom opportunities.
Some of our celebrations from last year include:
Whānau class module offered
Weaving module offered
Kaiako attending out of mahi (work) personal and professional development at Te Ahu o Te Reo Māori - 5 kaiako attended, a huge representation from WIS!
Kapa haka rōpu formed and entered in our regional competition
Pasifika group began and then we welcomed
Monika to support us in term 4
Matariki celebration day
Across kura PLD for kaimahi in karakia, waiata and pūrākau
Hearing more te reo Māori spoken in the playground
Purchase of rauemi (resources) to further support our classroom learning program's
Stepping into 2025 in this space has been exciting after such a rewarding year last year. We have been enthusiastically looking into what we want to offer this year and beyond.
As a team, we are very excited to share our kapa haka rōpu has started, tutored by Matua Chris, Whaea Jaimee, Whaea Mahinarangi and Whaea Jess. We meet each Tuesday in block 3 for an hour at this stage. Our current numbers are 83 participants! Many of them from our Year 7 cohort. We acknowledge the huge mahi our contributing kura are putting into their rōpu, we see such enthusiasm from our group.
Our Pasifika group is starting this term, the date to be confirmed. We are excited to welcome back Monika (a parent of a WIS student) to awhi us in this space.
Last year we held three successful Whānau Connect nights, where whānau are invited to kōrero with us about a variety of different topics. The first kaupapa for this year will be inviting our Whānau Māori to come in and spend some time us. The date for our first Whānau Connect will be on the 30th of April. More information to come.
Having whānau support us in our cultural learning experiences is incredibly valuable for building belonging for our rangatahi. We warmly invite you to reach out and chat with us about opportunities for you to be involved. Please email Whaea Jess at jessica.barnes@waimeaint.school.nz
