Procedures at the School Gate - what do you think?
As we move into Level 1, we want to take stock of how we have gone, look at what has been going well and make some changes as we move forward.
We have found (as have all other schools in New Zealand) that over the last three weeks, our children have developed great self-management skills and independence through our drop off and pick up procedures. Surprisingly, reduced anxiety has been evident with parents not dropping learners directly at the classroom. Teachers are valuing the 1-1 connection time with their learners from 8.30am.
As we move towards Level 1, we would like to continue these practices four days a week to maintain the growth we have seen. Your feedback around this proposal would be greatly appreciated;
BEFORE SCHOOL
Road Patrol (Greers / Wairakei Rd Lights) to start again from 8:25am to 8:45am
Monday - Thursday:
- Entry to school grounds remains at 8.30am (for students only).
- Learners continue to go in straight to class to be ready and build relationships with their peers and teacher. This is especially relevant during the cold mornings in our winter terms.
Friday:
- Entry to school grounds at 8.30am for students.
- Parents/caregivers are invited to go into the classrooms to celebrate and share their child's learning and are welcome to stay on for learning team hui and celebrations as timetabled to start at 8:50am.
Students will continue to not play before school outside over the winter
AFTER SCHOOL
Road Patrol (Greers / Wairakei Rd Lights) to start again from 2:45pm to 3:00pm
- School to finish for all at 2:45pm for winter terms (Term 2 & 3)
- Continue collection from the allocated gates on all days as is the case currently
- Grounds cleared by 3pm
As is the usual case, if any parent wants to make a time to talk with any of their child's teachers, this is always possible through our regular communication strategies - by emailing the teacher direct or calling the school for an appointment. As always , these are best made after 3pm.
BENEFITS THAT WE HAVE OBSERVED:
- Student independence is high
- Student organisation and self management have improved
- There is virtually no separation anxiety
- Relationships with teacher and student have strengthened
- Less traffic congestion around the gates
- Less/no noise outside the classrooms during learning time (particularly at the end of the day where it is very distracting)
Any long term changes to our current procedures will not take effect until Alert Level 1. Until then, the status quo remains.
At Level 1, the NZ Covid Tracer app will be encouraged to be used as we will not need to maintain our own school register. However, all visitors to the school must use hand sanitiser on entry to learning spaces and use the appropriate entry and exit doors.
