The tuakana–teina relationship, an integral part of traditional Māori society, provides a model for buddy systems. An older or more expert tuakana helps and guides a younger or less expert teina. In a learning environment that recognises the value of ako, the tuakana–teina roles may be reversed at any time.
Tamatea who is in Timatanga Hou has a differentiated timetable that allows him to work with Zephy from Wairere. These 2 read to each other, write together, and work on solving problems together. The boys love the special relationship they have and look forward to working together.
