Walk and Wheel to School Week a huge success

Rod Newton —

It's always awesome to see kids enjoying being active.

Walk and Wheel to School Week a huge success

This year’s Walk and Wheel to school week run by the Christchurch City Council was a huge success. It was great to see how many students got involved on different days in different activities. At Wairakei we already have many students that are lucky enough to walk or wheel to school on a daily basis. It was great to be able to have conversations around the mental and physical health benefits as well as having fun along the way.

On Tuesday we were impressed with the number of students that arrived at school with bags of rubbish or stories of what they had cleaned up. It was great to see them looking after our neighbourhood.

On Wednesday we saw a whole range of scooters and bikes decorated across the school and were able to cheer each other on as some of the students showed off their wheels. There were lots of bright colours and some amazing designs.

On Thursday we had the music pumping and students were able to enjoy different areas of the school. It was very popular with students enjoying the chance to ride their wheels around the courts and the field.

All in all it was a great week to enjoy some physical activity. We look forward to our next opportunity to have some school wide fun.

Prizes to come.

We still have some prizes to hand out. Once we have collected the majority of the student Ride and Wheel to school passports we will be using them to draw out some prizes. These prizes will be handed out at school and brought home. Students will also go into a draw with the City Council to win a scooter.
