A child attending school while they are infectious with measles is very likely to spread the disease to other students and teachers who are not immunised. In an outbreak the Medical Officer of Health can order that un-immunised children must stay home from school until they are no longer a risk of either catching the disease or passing it on to others. Symptoms of measles can include fever, running nose and sore red watery eyes which can last for several days before a red blotchy rash appears. Anyone who has any of these symptoms should call ahead before visiting their family doctor, after hours clinic or Emergency Department so steps can be taken to reduce the risk of infecting others in the waiting room.
