Matariki celebrations
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the 'eyes of god' (mata ariki) or 'little eyes' (mata riki).
We celebrated Matariki in our Whānau groups on Monday 24th June. This involved the children learning about Matakriki and the significance of it and then preparing and enjoying kai together. They also did activities related to Matariki within the Tuakana Teina model of younger and older children working together.
