'GOLD AWARD' at School Gardens Show for Garden Gurus!

Catherine Parkes —

At the recent Odering's School Gardens Show our Year 6 Garden Guru group were awarded a gold level award for their exhibit, 'A Dual Purpose'.

The overall theme for the Oderings School Gardens Show was ‘Into the Future’. Our exhibit was called ‘A Dual Purpose’. It focused on the idea that the future is uncertain so we need to ensure that we can make our world and our own communities sustainable, with a greater degree of self sufficiency.

In October 2017 a ‘Focus Group’ was setup at Wairakei School. The aim of the group was to work together with Mrs. Parkes to plan, design, make and enter an exhibit into the Oderings School Gardens Show.

The ‘Garden Gurus’ have met and worked together for at least an hour per week since October 2017. As a group we chose to focus on plants that we grow in our school garden and to introduce some new ones to the school environment.

All of the plants in the display were either edible or medicinal, have at least 2 uses or are plants that can grow in conditions that may become difficult if resources such as water are not always readily available.

As well as the plants having a ‘dual’ purpose the garden was designed to be  beautiful and attractive to look at.
