The Myths of Maui

Ruth Pritchard —

Wairere are exploring Myths and Legends and spent some of the day watching Moana to gain more of an understanding about the structure of a good narrative before we write out own.

As part of our writing unit on narratives we are diving deep into myths and legends. Part of this is understanding that good narratives have some set components:

- an orientation (which includes characters and setting descriptions)

- a plot that incorporates a problem that needs to be overcome

- a series of events

- a resolution or outcome

To make this relevant for the students we watched Moana so that we could unpack the many amazing characters, the problem of the heart of Te Whiti being stolen, and the series of events that led to its return. Students were fully engaged in this process and have produced some quality work while watching the movie that will help them as they look to create their own myths and legends over the coming weeks.
