Making Rēwena!
In Wairere over the last week of Term 2 much of our learning has been about Matariki, which included making Rēwena.
As part of out teaching and learning we learnt how to make rēwena. This is a traditional Māori bread recipe where a "bug' is made to provide the base for the bread, from potato.
On Wednesday Lerome & Lukas prepared the 'bug' by dicing, cooking and then mashing the potato.
To this 'mash' and potato water, sugar and flour was added to make a batter. Whaea Catherine took the 'bug' home to feed with extra sugar and flour so that it was ready for baking on Friday at school.
After the making of the dough, a lot of kneading and then waiting for 4 hours to let the bread rise, it was baked.
The Wairere team enjoyed the freshly baked, warm bread with butter and jam!
