Bobby the Penguin (that's me!)

Ruth Pritchard —

When I arrived at Wairakei this morning I was nameless, friendless and a little shy. The students in Wairere enthusiastically accepted me as their friend and classmate "Bobby" (after a fiercely fought naming competition which included some campaigning posters).

So far my time at school has been filled with board games, a Kahoot quiz, getting carried around in style, a trip to the dairy to grab some lunch (the dairy had fish! I was so excited! Turns out they were chocolately and a little disappointing, so I shared them with Wairere), a ride on Whaea Catherine's wheelchair when she wasn't looking, and  listening to an awesome music performance. The performance had me dancing away like an extra from Happy Feet!

Next week I'm looking forward to listening to some reading, a game or two of flipper ball (that's what we call hand ball where I come from), joining a DMIC maths group, and helping the team figure out what they're going to do with me.

I may look a little dull and boring at the moment, but over the coming weeks the students in Wairere are going to transform me into something beautiful while also using me to tell a story to the people of Christchurch. Watch this space!
