NW Zone Winter Tournament

Rod Newton —

This year the NW Zone Winter Tournament was held at Hayley Park on Wednesday 1st of August. We sent four excited teams in four different sports to battle it out with the best teams from around our zone. There were many different schools sent teams, some of which we are not used to playing against.

Throughout the morning students gave their best and represented Wairakei with distinction. We are very lucky to have so many hardworking, talented sportspeople. Our school is also developing a bit of a reputation for our sportsmanship and our beautiful new sports uniforms.

We really appreciate the continued support of our coaches. They volunteer their personal time and work so hard to allow your children the opportunity to compete in events such as this one. Without them, it wouldn’t be possible. This year we had some excellent results to be proud of.

Here is a report from each sport.

Soccer by Aakash and Eniitan

Playing in the NW football tournament was outstanding in Hagley park. Unfortunately we couldn’t go to any of the finals. We vs against Isleworth, Cotswold, Roydvale, Westburn, Avonhead. We came 9th place from 12 teams and we won the playoffs against Westburn b team. Oliver, Ruby k and Aakash scored the goals for the team. Our team players were Aakash, Oliver, Eniitan, Kaiden, Kaira, Marius, Lucas, Elsie-kate, Ruby k.

The games had a different set up because the games were 10 minutes long, there were very small goals and pitches. There were no offsides and we could only score goals when we were very close to the goal. If the ball went behind the goal it became a goal kick. There was no corner kick it would still be goal kick, but if the match was a draw the corners counted as points.

Thanks to also our coach and assistant coach, Miss Hume (coach) and Rachel (Assistant coach and oliver’s mum).

Hockey By Brooklyn

Last week on Wednesday the 1st of August Brooklyn, Nate, Princess, Rhian, Brodie, Kendal and Leah competed at the NW Zone Winter Tournament for hockey .

We played many great teams that including Christ The King, Westburn, Russley, Avonhead and many more. First game we versed Christ The King and we won 2 - 0 that was one of the most challenging games because they had a really good players that were just whacking the ball up the line.

All in total we came 2nd in the final which is pretty good. We all had a awesome time and much fun at the tournament. We had quite a few wins and drew one. The final points of the tournament for Wairakei was ten and eleven for Westburn so we were so close to being first we were just 1 point off.

Netball by Anya V

On Wednesday the first of August I competed in the sport tournament for the netball team. I played with Imogen, Aliyah, Ava-Lea, Jayda, Peyton, Isabel, Jorja and Kylah. It was great fun I had an awesome game. We drew in the first game and won the rest of the games. We managed to win the ‘B’ grade.

Rugby by Preston and Xavier W.S

The Wairakei rugby team went to the North - West zone tournament and we all enjoyed it. We had so much fun, coming second overall. We won three games and only lost to Cotswold. First we played Avonhead and won 15 - 0, then Russley and won 20 - 0. Sadly we lost to Cotswold 15 - 5 and then came back from 10 - 0 to win 15 - 10 to beat Isleworth.

Everyone played amazing and really hard, but we just need to work on spreading out and blowing over. Unfortunately some people didn't get to play like Archie and Penny but other than that we played amazing and had so much fun. We were just 2 tries off winning the tournament. From all of the rugby team we thank Mr Edlin for helping us out when Mr Newton could not be there for the whole tournament.
